Nasreen Khatoon, the pregnant woman who reportedly fell ill after being administered a saline drip at Midnapore Medical College, passed away at Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital around 10 PM on Sunday. She had been undergoing treatment since January 12 and was on ventilation due to kidney damage caused by disrupted blood flow to the brain. Her condition remained critical throughout her four-month hospitalisation.
According to Nasreen’s family, she was admitted to the hospital for a cesarean delivery, after which she underwent a second operation. The reason for this second surgery remains unclear. Shortly after these procedures, Nasreen's health deteriorated. She was initially placed on ventilation support in the ICU of Midnapore Medical College. Doctors had indicated only a 20 percent chance of recovery. She was later transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for further treatment.
Nasreen’s family claims she became critically ill due to saline poisoning, which they believe triggered a chain of medical complications. Despite prolonged treatment at SSKM, her condition showed no signs of improvement. Her death has brought attention to the circumstances surrounding her treatment and the need for clarity on the medical decisions made following her delivery.
